MBGC 2026 Membership Drive
Each year, MBGC typically loses 40–50 members because of age, health, finances, relocation, and other life changes.
At the beginning of 2026, membership declined by 46—from 475 to 429—across the Full, Limited, Intermediate, and Leave of Absence categories.
After welcoming 17 new members in April, membership gradually rose to 469 by September. The club’s membership cap is 500.
With another 40–50 departures anticipated in 2027, the Board is initiating a focused membership drive.
The Offer
From now through November 15, 2026, MBGC will offer a special incentive to the first 25 eligible new members.
New members who join by November 15, pay the non-refundable $1,000 initiation fee when they sign up, and commit to a Full Membership for 2027 will receive complimentary golf for the remainder of 2026.
If the club has not enrolled 25 new members by November 15, the offer will continue until December 1. Those who join later will receive less complimentary golf, creating an incentive to commit early.
Member Recruitment Incentive
Current members will receive one sleeve of golf balls for each new member they recruit. We encourage everyone to share this opportunity with friends, family, and colleagues.
Why This Matters
MBGC’s annual budget relies on maintaining full membership. A strong membership base helps us keep annual dues among the most affordable in the area and fund course improvements aligned with the Strategic Plan.
The drive will also strengthen the club’s financial position by generating initiation fees now and beginning new-member dues in January rather than April.

LADIES 18-HOLE LEAGUE WIND UP
Our AGM meeting was held on Thursday, Oct 8 at the Fuller Lake Arena.
The year was a success with more ladies out playing than previous years… at least since Covid.
We had 6 Interclub matches, winning five, against Cedar Hill, Fairwinds, Nanaimo, Port Alberni and Salt Spring Island. Our only loss was to Arbutus Ridge. We also successfully defended the Hedley Cup against Cowichan, a historic competition that has been running since 1952. These interclub matches are a terrific way to meet fellow golfers and experience other courses, as they are home-and-away competitions.
During our league play, we have various competitions: Rose Bowl, Captain vs. Vice Captain, Team Tournament and League Championship.
Board Representative Laura Rasmussen attended our meeting to share course updates and answer questions about our Ladies League. All of which was very positive.
The outgoing executive were thanked with flowers and gifts in appreciation of their time and work. The new executives were welcomed and thanked for taking on the positions for 2027. It’s always great to have new energy in these positions.
We all feel very lucky to have a beautiful but challenging course to play on at Mount Brenton!
The 2027 executive consists of Captain Sally Duffy, Vice-Captain Deb Duff, Secretary Laverne Boschee, Treasurer Laurie Taylor, Match Chairs Karen Craig & Dana Stutsky, Interclub Susan Mulcahy, Handicap/Rules Heather Owsianski.

The Legend grows…
Congratulations to Rachael and Gina for finishing the Las Vegas Half-Marathon in the cone of Hurricane Rachael (yes, that is correct) as part of fundraising efforts to advance research, treatments, and a cure for oligodendroglioma, a rare form of brain cancer.
To date, OligoNation has raised $22,894.
And if you missed out, there is still time to donate.
For the next week or so, you will see the staff at both the Mount Brenton and Brass Bell pubs wearing T-shirts honouring and showing respect and love for their boss, “Hurricane” Rachael Viala, who, along with Gina Brooks, completed the Las Vegas Half-Marathon in dreadful – the tail end of actual Hurricane Rachael – weather conditions. Many of the 7,000 entrants didn’t attempt the event.
Rachael and Gina completed the final stage of a fundraiser to raise over $21,000 for Oligodendroglioma research. The disease is a rare form of brain cancer.
Bonnie and Tanya are our shirt models. Tanya, top right, created the design, and Candice and Rick at Milltown Graphics took it to the next level to get the shirts done in time.

The Golf Course
Mount Brenton Golf Course opened in 1948 and celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2023. The par 71/73 course, Vancouver Island’s Hidden Gem, is in the scenic, historic town of Chemainus, Canada’s Mural Capital. With shaded fairways flanked by towering firs, the course also features willow, hemlock, maple, scotch, ponderosa pine, sequoia, cedar, dogwood, and giant cottonwood. The course is challenging for every level of golfer; there are creeks to hurdle and ponds to circumvent. Maintained by an excellent grounds crew, the fairways are lush, the greens are true and tricky, and the sand is deep. An extensive drainage system also makes Mount Brenton one of the most playable golf courses year-round on Vancouver Island. Book a tee time today and come and see for yourself.

The Mount Brenton Pub kitchen is open daily from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. for breakfast; until 11:30 on weekends (8 a.m. until noon on Sundays); and from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. for lunch and dinner, Sunday through Tuesday, and until 9 p.m. on Wednesday through Saturday.
Beverage service runs until 9 p.m. from Sunday through Thursday, and until 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
